Pool Opening Instructions

Removing debris and water from pool cover. Remove as much debris from top of cover as possible. Do not use your leaf skimmer for this task, use a leaf rake. After most of the debris is removed, brush the cover down while there is still water on it. Next drain the water from on top of the cover by siphoning it with a hose or by using a submersible pump. Direct water to a street, catch basin where possible or somewhere that there is good drainage. You will probably have to remove the last bit of water with a bailing can.

Removing the cover. Once any securing devices such as water bags, snap in beading, winches or cables have been removed, you can begin removing the cover by taking hold of the material in two corners and pulling it 4 ft. onto the deck. Repeat this process folding the cover accordion style (back onto itself) until all of it has been piled on the deck or ground. Vinyl covers must be stored in a water filled container over the summer.

Clean and prepare the pool shell. Remove the plugs from the returns and restore directional fittings. Empty the winterizing materials from the skimmer and replace with the skimmer parts. Using a vinyl pool cleaner, scrub the waterline, coping, and skimmer surface. Do not use a household cleaner.

Start adding water to the pool with a garden hose.

Prepare the filter. After coating the threads with Teflon Tape, replace the gauges and drain plugs on the pump and filter, and replace the strainer cover.

Prepare heater. Replace all the drain plugs and reconnect the copper line to the pressure sensing switch if it was disconnected during closing. Turn the main gas valve on and light as per manufacturers' instructions posted on the inside of the front door panel.

Prepare the automatic chlorinator or brominator. Remove any protective covering used over the winter, replace its lid and set the feeder valve to a medium position.

Restore miscellaneous deck equipment. Install ladders, bumpers, boards and misc. deck equipment ensuring that all ladder anchors are secure. Coat all bolts and nuts on any equipment with teflon tape or grease before installing.

Start Circulation. Start the pump when the water level is halfway up the skimmer opening, the pump is primed with water, the multiport valve is in the backwash position, and all gate valves are set for normal operation. When the flow starts, let it run on backwash for 15 seconds. After rinsing for 15 seconds turn the motor off, and set the handle to the filter position and restart the motor.
